- mechanism: Sulfoxone is a competitive inhibitor of bacterial enzyme dihydropteroate synthetase. The normal substrate for the enzyme, para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA) cannot bind as usual. The inhibited reaction is necessary in these organisms for the synthesis of folic acid.
